Most Shopify merchants will read a roundup of the Summer 2026 Edition, nod along, and change nothing. That’s a mistake – not because every update matters, but because a few of them have hard deadlines that have already passed, and one structural shift is quietly deciding which shops get discovered by AI and which ones don’t.
150+ updates shipped. Here’s what actually requires action – based on what we’re seeing in client shops right now.
Also relevant: we covered what the Shopify Winter Edition 2026 introduced on the AI front – Summer 2026 takes that further.
Your products are in AI search. Are they being found?
The biggest Summer 2026 move isn’t a feature. It’s a structural one.
Agentic Storefronts are now generally available for all Shopify stores, which means ChatGPT Shopping, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot can browse your catalog, build carts, and route shoppers to your checkout – without a human ever visiting your website first.
This runs automatically via the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). You didn’t opt in. You’re already on these channels.
The brands investing in clean, differentiated product data today are the ones that will show up in AI search results twelve months from now. This is the 2026 equivalent of doing basic SEO in 2010 – obvious in hindsight, ignored by most in the moment.
Sidekick 2.0 adds another layer. Sidekick Pulse now delivers proactive recommendations without you having to ask. For AI readiness audits, Sidekick can flag gaps on individual products, but full catalog audits require dedicated apps like SKAW or AgentSight from the Shopify App Store.
Most clients come to us with the basics in place – at least one product description and clean specs. What's missing is differentiation – descriptions that say something unique, attributes that are actually complete. That's the lever for AI discoverability, and it's usually the easiest one to pull.
Checkout in 2026: what’s finally done, and what’s already broken
Read this section carefully, because it has a deadline attached.
Shopify Scripts sunset: 30 June 2026. If your shop runs custom discount logic, shipping rules, or payment customisation through Scripts, that logic has already stopped executing. Scripts don’t break order processing – but they do stop running silently. The fix is migrating to Shopify Functions and Checkout UI Extensions.
In our portfolio, roughly only 10% of merchants are affected at all. Of those, only a handful run meaningful custom checkout logic through Scripts. For most shops, this is genuinely a non-event. But for the few Plus merchants with real custom logic – tiered B2B pricing, regional payment restrictions, complex discount stacking – it’s urgent.
Checkout Components are now generally available for Shopify Plus merchants. This builds on Checkout Extensibility – the system that already replaced checkout.liquid – giving you a block-based way to customize checkout without touching code.
Two other updates worth noting quickly:
- Shop Pay Everywhere (launched in Spring ’26) is now available to brands not hosted on Shopify, giving non-Shopify merchants access to 250M+ shoppers
- Discount stacking has expanded. Shopify Plus merchants can now combine multiple product discounts on the same item. For other plans, the basics remain: one product discount per item, though automatic discounts and codes can still combine in some cases

Native AI merchandising: not replacing apps, unlocking capability
The framing of “AI is replacing your apps” is tempting but slightly wrong. For most merchants, sophisticated merchandising tools were never used at all. Shopify is making real capability accessible to everyone, not disrupting an existing app stack.
What’s new natively:
| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| AI Collection Sort | Sorts collections by predicted conversion, not manual order |
| Predictive Cross-sell Blocks | Cart-aware upsell recommendations, no separate app needed |
| Merchandising Insights Panel | Native analytics showing top and underperforming products |
| Catalog optimization guidance | Identifies missing or incomplete product information that may affect AI discovery |
The exception: 3–4 clients we work with run dedicated search apps that genuinely outperform anything native, particularly for large or complex catalogs. For them, native AI search isn’t a replacement yet. For everyone else, the question is worth asking: what are you paying for that Shopify now does?
One live example from our team: we’re currently building an ERP connector plus a volume pricing integration for a Swiss retailer to increase average order value (AOV). The app decision predates the Summer 2026 Edition – it’s not a verdict against native volume pricing, just an existing setup that works. But the principle holds: audit your app stack against what Shopify now does natively.
B2B just got serious
Two Summer 2026 B2B updates matter in practice.
Net terms and automated invoicing are now native to Shopify Plus. Net 30 and Net 60 with automatic invoice generation, no separate billing app required. This directly replaces one of the most common reasons merchants were stitching together B2B workflows with third-party tools.
Volume pricing by customer segment continues to improve. This capability rolled out to all plans in Spring 2026, letting you assign tiered pricing to segments rather than individual accounts. Summer 2026 refines the interface and integrations.
From what we see with Swiss B2B clients: merchants running an ERP aren’t abandoning it for native Shopify order management. The pattern is building connectors around the ERP, not replacing it. But native volume pricing for consumables and fast-moving goods is genuinely useful, especially for merchants without a heavy ERP setup.

Five things worth doing this month
These aren’t suggestions. They’re actions.
- Check your Scripts. If you’re on Plus, verify whether any custom checkout logic runs through Scripts. The deadline was 30 June 2026 – execution has already stopped.
- Run Sidekick’s AI readiness audit on your catalog. Take your top 10 products plus 10 new arrivals. Make each description genuinely unique and move specs out of body text into actual attribute fields. This is the easiest discoverability win available right now.
- Map your checkout (Plus merchants). Audit what you had in checkout.liquid and Scripts, identify what needs rebuilding in Checkout Components and Functions, and schedule that work.
- Audit your merchandising app stack. AI Collection Sort, Predictive Cross-sell, and the Merchandising Insights Panel now cover what many merchants were paying for monthly.
- Test native net terms if you do B2B. Net 30 and Net 60 with automated invoicing are now built in. If you’re patching this together with a billing app, run a comparison.
For Swiss merchants specifically: the most common gap isn’t technical – it’s inconsistent attribute maintenance. Products get created with fields filled in, then new arrivals drift. The fix is treating your top 20 products as a permanent benchmark: descriptions stay unique, attributes stay complete.
The fundamentals still win
Here’s the most underestimated thing about Summer 2026: the new updates matter far less than getting the basics right. Clean product data. Descriptions that say something differentiated. Email flows that actually run. Analytics that someone actually looks at.
The shops that look back at summer 2026 as a turning point aren’t the ones that activated every new update the week it launched. They’re the ones that used this Edition as a forcing function – clean up the data, get off Scripts, get serious about what AI discovery actually requires.

What our clients ask us
FAQs
Does my shop need to do anything for Agentic Storefronts, or is it automatic?
The infrastructure is enabled by default. What you need to actively manage is the quality of your product data. Thin descriptions and missing attributes mean you’re technically discoverable but practically invisible.
