Shopify Agency Switzerland: Avoid a Costly Mistake

Most Swiss brands pick their Shopify agency like a holiday restaurant: nice website, good gut feeling. Then a CHF 100,000 project goes sideways. Portfolio and price predict nothing. Here’s what does, which red flags should end the call, and what Swiss budgets really look like.

Shopify Plus is Shopify’s enterprise plan for larger or more complex online shops, typically with ERP integrations, custom checkout logic or B2B features. Building, relaunching or migrating a shop on it easily costs CHF 20,000 to 100,000+ in Switzerland. Yet most buyers pick their agency the way they pick a holiday restaurant: nice-looking website, good gut feeling. That’s how expensive mistakes happen.

Here’s what actually predicts a good partner, which red flags should end the conversation, and what a realistic Swiss budget looks like. The short version: technology is the baseline. Understanding your business is the differentiator.

Why portfolio and price are the worst way to choose a Shopify agency

Portfolio and price tell you almost nothing about how a project will go. Shopify’s ecosystem counts more than 700,000 registered partners worldwide, so a polished portfolio is easy to find. Even the Shopify partner directory only gets you so far: a tier badge reflects history and volume, not whether that team fits your business. Use it to build a shortlist, not to make the decision.

Clients who switch to us tell remarkably similar stories. Take a Swiss footwear retailer (anonymised, of course). The shop went live, but the people running it had little idea how to use it. Nobody at the previous agency was reachable at short notice. And the result didn’t match what they’d imagined, plus it was complex to handle every day. Neither portfolio nor price had hinted at any of that.

What a strong Shopify Plus partner does differently

A strong partner asks more questions than you expect, and keeps asking. Real expertise shows in the first conversations. A good agency doesn’t only want to know which features you need. It wants to know how the shop should feel day to day, for your customers and for the staff who work in it.

Technology is the baseline. Understanding how your business really runs is what separates a good partner from an expensive mistake.

An agency that believes everything you tell it is mainly interested in building. And building without understanding gives you a half-finished solution. Keep in mind that even you don’t fully know how a process you defined plays out for your team every day. A quick alignment and a fast onboarding sound attractive (and cheap), but they cover only a fraction of reality.

Once that’s in place, check these four things:

  • Verified expertise: Look at partner directory status, and at whether the agency focuses on Shopify or treats it as one platform among many. If you plan a Plus build, ask which Plus projects it has shipped recently.

Want to know more about what Shopify Plus actually offers?
  • Migration and integration track record: Every project is a bit different, but most of the work overlaps. Any agency with full-stack developers (integrations) and Shopify developers (data migration) can do it. More experience helps, but it’s not the differentiator. Your business differs in the details.

  • Support after launch: Training should focus on what was built specifically for you. Generic Shopify know-how is covered by Shopify itself, through Sidekick (its built-in AI assistant) and Shopify Academy, so don’t pay agency hours for it. At what., launch is followed by a 2–4 week aftercare phase. A first response, often already the fix, typically comes within two working days and usually the same day.
  • Swiss fit: MWST, TWINT, QR-bill invoicing, local ERPs, logistics and languages are table stakes. Many agencies handle them, including local payment setups.

What makes the difference is the willingness to understand your business, and to invest the time until it’s truly understood. That’s rarer than any certificate.

Red flags that should end the conversation

Some warning signs show up before you sign anything:

  • Vague pricing or a quote without a clear scope
  • They accept your brief without questioning it
  • A low quote paired with a very short discovery and onboarding phase
  • They can’t talk in detail about projects in their own portfolio
  • No plan for training your team on what was custom-built
  • No post-launch plan
  • Your contact person keeps changing

One red flag is a reason to ask questions. Two is usually a reason to walk away.

What a Shopify Plus agency costs in Switzerland

Expect to start at around CHF 15,000 for an agency-built, design-led store, and to go beyond CHF 100,000 for complex Shopify Plus builds. Below CHF 15,000, an agency project with a small design and a basic store is hardly realistic in Switzerland. For simpler setups, a freelancer or a ready-made theme is usually the smarter route.

Project typeTypical investment
Design-led, functional store built by an agencyFrom about CHF 15,000
Complex Shopify Plus build with integrationsCHF 25,000–100,000+
Ongoing costsShopify plan plus agency retainer

The most important cost factor is scope. For CHF 15,000 you get something visually appealing and functional, but not the next big marketplace. Agree on what’s in and out before anyone writes a line of code.

And the cheapest quote is often the most expensive one later. What gets saved on understanding your business upfront comes back as change requests, delays and rework.

Pick understanding, not the homepage

The right Shopify partner is chosen on verifiable expertise and on what happens after launch, not on the homepage or the lowest quote. Technology is the baseline, and understanding is the differentiator. The weeks after go-live show whether that understanding was ever there.

Agentic commerce – AI agents that browse, compare and buy on a customer’s behalf – will only widen that gap, as more routine store tasks and even purchase decisions shift away from the storefront itself (is your store ready for AI search?). How do I build a shortlist of Shopify agencies?

Start with the Shopify partner directory, then add peer recommendations and stores you admire. Look at live shops, not just case study pages, and ask past clients how the agency behaved after launch.
